چکیده

This paper compares two methods of cloud flagging that were developed at the Deutscher Ž . Wetterdients DWD and at the Laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, University of Thessaloniki Ž . LAP . The two methods are applied to the same data set to uncover their similarities and differences. The LAP method aimed at flagging the quality of global UV irradiance spectral measurements with respect to the purity of their spectral characteristics, while the DWD flags describe the sky conditions and their effects on the radiation field in an absolute sense as well as their short-time variability. In this respect, the two methods appear to have distinct differences, and also similarities, in describing when the sun’s disk is occluded or not. q 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Technical guide to Set Up a Spectral Solar Direct Normal Irradiance Permanent Station: Study Area- Hannover, Germany

The spectral Direct Normal Irradiance (SDNI) is a basic radiometric quantity from which many other quantities can be derived. It provides not only information about the spectral and distribution of the direct solar radiation reaching a particular location. Accurate knowledge about the spectral direct irradiance shall enable us to gain new scientific results in the: determination of cloud effect...

An efficient method for cloud detection based on the feature-level fusion of Landsat-8 OLI spectral bands in deep convolutional neural network

Cloud segmentation is a critical pre-processing step for any multi-spectral satellite image application. In particular, disaster-related applications e.g., flood monitoring or rapid damage mapping, which are highly time and data-critical, require methods that produce accurate cloud masks in a short time while being able to adapt to large variations in the target domain (induced by atmospheric c...

Comparison of TOMS retrievals and UVMRP measurements of surface spectral UV radiation in the United States

Surface noontime spectral ultraviolet (UV) irradiances during May-September of 2000–2004 from the total ozone mapping spectrometer (TOMS) satellite retrievals are systematically compared with the ground measurements at 27 climatological sites maintained by the USDA UV-B Monitoring and Research Program. The TOMS retrievals are evaluated by two cloud screening methods and local air quality condit...

A study on Ca II 854.2 nm emission in a sunspot umbra using a thin cloud model

In the present work, we introduce and explain a method of solution of the radiative transfer equation based on a thin cloud model. The efficiency of this method to retrieve dynamical chromospheric parameters from Stokes I profiles of Ca II 854.2 nm line showing spectral emission is investigated. The analyzed data were recorded with the Crisp Imaging Spectro-Polarimeter (CRISP) at Swedish 1-m So...

Comparison of UV irradiances from Aura/Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) with Brewer measurements at El Arenosillo (Spain) – Part 1: Analysis of parameter influence

The main objective of this study is to compare the erythemal UV irradiance (UVER) and spectral UV irradiances (at 305, 310 and 324 nm) from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) onboard NASA EOS/Aura polar sun-synchronous satellite (launched in July 2004, local equator crossing time 01:45 p.m.) with ground-based measurements from the Brewer spectrophotometer #150 located at El Arenosillo (South...
